The School Garden Project
2008 ONWARDS

The Vocational Committee, who developed this project aimed to involve and cover the following important community areas:- Schools, both Junior and Senior. Young People Education Sustainable Environmental Issues Local Businesses Local Voluntary Organisations.

St Mary's Catholic Primary School and St Edmund Arrowsmith High School were both looking for an enviromental project within the local community. So the Club's Vocational Committee became the de-facto project managers and brought them and a number of local businesses together. The Children at St Mary's designed their garden as part of the Science and Technology Lessons. Many and varied were the designs but trees, flowers and vegetables were all included and without exception they all incorporated a pond into their design. The Rotarian Project Managers acquired the services and goodwill of various local businesses including a garden centre, a nursery and two local constuction companies who between them either donated materials or gave generous discounts investing considerable amounts of time and money to the project. One feature being a central macadamised circle, which will be used as the base for an outdoor classroom. The whole project area is surrounded by a handsome fence. In June of 2009, forty students and a few staff from St Edmund's arrived on some of the hottest days of the year and toiled with boundless enthusiasim. They planted an orchard with Apple, Pear, Plum and Cherry Trees. They filled boxed flower beds with 12 tonnes of soil and planted them with flowers and vegetables. They also constructed what has become a spectacular wildlife pond.
